Thermo Tommy

Final project of the bachelor product design ENGINEERING

This project was the final project of my bachelor Industrial Design Engineering at the TU Delft. The project was for the company Invented4Kids. Invented4Kids is an innovative company within the baby and children product market.

The target group within this project were babies between the age of zero to twelve months. During this project I focused on using methods and the mindset of Human-centred design.

During the project I used the method of context mapping. Parents had to fill in a booklet for 4 days. After this I did an interview with the parents and their home.

During the project I used the method of context mapping. Parents had to fill in a booklet for 4 days. After this I did an interview with the parents and their home.

After context mapping I found the problem of uncertainty of parents about their baby’s body temperature. Working together with parents, childcare and paediatricians I came up with the design of Thermo Tommy.

Thermo Tommy gives security about the temperature around the baby in the pram. A baby isn’t able to regulate their own body temperature. Therefor, it is important parents dress up their baby in the right way. Thermo Tommy gives advice about how to dress up your baby. Thermo Tommy is placed in the pram next to head of the baby. Around the head is the most specific place to measure the temperature which influences the baby’s body temperature.

Testing with smart materials

During this project I did a lot of research and tests with smart materials which react on temperature. During this test I used different temperature sensitive paintings on different fabrics.
